Whales in Sydney Harbour

31 July 2002: Just before lunch today, we saw helicopters buzzing around the harbour. We took a look and saw a circle of boats surrounding some whales! We dashed to the Sydney Harbour Bridge to take the following shots.

Under the bridge: We took these ones leaning over the pedestrian walkway on the eastern side of the bridge.

Swimming west: The whales were slowly swimming west, so as they went under the bridge, we moved over to the bicycle path on the western side of the bridge to photograph these.

The boats were slowly moving backwards to give the whales some room. Police boats were nearby.

1 Aug www.surfworx.com.au These are great pics, although crop out the bridge on some of them. In South Oz we see whales alot, and boy they are tough subjects - you sit there for hours and hours waiting for a breach - go to the toilet, and they breach! Excellent angle, very few people see whales from this perspective, unless you are on The Nullabor - where the water is ever-so-slightly cleaner. Great work dude!
